Baroness Scotland Broke Employment Laws
It was reported in the Daily Mail today that the Attorney General Baroness Scotland has been employing an illegal immigrant for the past six months. Loloahi Tapui 27, from Tonga worked in Baroness Scotland’s home as her housekeeper. Even unknowingly employing an overstayer is still an offence punishable by a fine up to £10,000 under legislation that Lady Scotland helped push through the House of Lords when she was a Home Office Minister.
According to the article in the Daily Mail Baroness Scotland apparently saw documents which led her to believe that Ms Tapui was entitled to work but would not specify what documents these were. Section 8 of the Asylum of the Immigration Act 1996 amended in 2004 and 2006 provides a full list of the documents that Baroness Scotland should have looked at before employing Ms Tapui. As the leading law officer in England and Wales we would expect Baroness Scotland to respect the rule of law.
The Sunlight Centre is contacting Baroness Scotland this morning. Due to the serious nature of the story we will be reporting Baroness Scotland to the UKBA. Below is our contact letter sent earlier:
